The Central Texas Food Bank is looking for a dynamic Health & Safety Director in our Operations Department. This is a new role and will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the Central Texas Food Bank is in compliance with applicable local, state and federal health and safety laws, as well as work to identify and implement measures to reduce and prevent injury and illness to employees, visitors and volunteers while visiting or conducting Central Texas Food Bank work in the facility or in the communities we serve. The role of the Health & Safety Director is highly visible internally and externally and will be responsible for managing/overseeing the Facilities Department, the Safety Committee as well as all operations audits.
As a Health & Safety Director, you will
- Be responsible for providing day-to-day guidance and direction of Central Texas Food Bank compliance with current policies and procedures that include but are not limited to: Feeding America procedures, OSHA, Health Department, DEA, TX Department of Agriculture, AIB and other government agencies.
- Manage the Facilities Department; including, but not limited to, interviewing and selection, training and mentoring, clarifying expectations, developing performance standards, conducting performance evaluations, providing counseling and guidance, and promoting professional growth, training and development of employees.
- Oversee and lead internal and external audits, i.e., American Institute of Baking (AIB)
- Participate in and provide oversight/guidance to the Central Texas Food Bank internal Safety Committee.
- Direct Health and Safety Program from implementation, monitoring, evaluation and process improvement. Serves as the internal subject matter expert in Health and Safety matters for Central Texas Food Bank.
- Review and/or develop safety and health policies, standards, and processes to meet all local, state and federal guidelines directed towards identifying, preventing and reducing workplace accidents and exposures that may result in people or financial loss to the Central Texas Food Bank.
- Identify, establish and implement new training programs for employees, contractors, visitors and volunteers within the organization (such as PPE requirements).
- Monitor compliance, document and address violations of Central Texas Food Bank Health and Safety policies and standards. Immediate notification of such violations to departmental Chief Officers.
- Investigate, document and report all health and safety-related accidents within established timeframe, as well as determining cause and future prevention. Coordinate the need for medical interventions when needed, in consultation with Central Texas Food Bank Chief People Officer.
- Supervise and make recommendation in the installation of potentially harmful equipment and the disposal of hazardous substances. Conduct an assessment of possible risks and ensure that preventive measures are taken.
- Perform related work as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for unforeseen responses.
You are a great candidate if you have
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Safety Management, Civil Engineering, Public Health or related field with three (3) years’ experience as a Health & Safety Director/Manager and experience in managing teams/people.
- Possess In-depth knowledge of current safety legislation and procedures/processes.
- OSHA 30 certification in construction or general industry, within past 5 years.
- Knowledge of food safety handling procedures and regulations, including Food Handler certification (or acquire within 60 days).
- Experience with data reporting processes.
- Experience communicating with senior leaders and team members internally/externally to the organization while maintaining a positive customer service attitude, flexibility and poise.
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills, to include delegation, strategic management, problem solving, motivating, managing conflict, coaching/counseling and mentoring required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences in verbal, written, and presentation forms, to effectively solicit cooperation from internal and external key stakeholders.
- Skill in public speaking, ability to clearly express ideas and information in various settings.
- Ability to work under limited direction and supervision with high levels of initiative, participate as an effective team member by completing all tasks as assigned.
- Proven demonstration of good judgement, tact and discretion in handling confidential information.
- A valid government issued driver’s license
Bonus points for
- Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited university.
- Five (5) years’ experience as a Health & Safety Director/Manager, with two (2) years’ experience managing teams.
- Certification as Environmental & Safety Compliance Officer and/or Registered Environmental Professional.
- Extensive knowledge of safe warehouse practices (lifting, stacking pallets, power equipment etc.).
- Experience in project management, organizing and managing multiple projects under strict timelines.
- Flexibility; willing to work with a modified work schedule, as needed, to ensure Central Texas Food Bank goals and objectives are achieved.
