In this role you will drive the Food Bank’s strategic priorities in the key areas of community health and nutrition. The Director of Community Health and Nutrition is responsible for applying a public health lens to the Food Bank’s efforts to alleviate food insecurity, helping position the Food Bank as a leader in promoting community health. This position oversees the development and execution of our Nutrition Education and Health initiatives and oversees a team of ten professionals on our Community Health and Nutrition, Garden and Nutrition Education teams. Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, this position is highly visible internally and externally and is critical to our success in addressing hunger as a health issue.
As the Director of Community Health & Nutrition, you will
- Create and operationalize a strategic vision for community health & nutrition work and direct department and programmatic activities, project implementation and partnership development in alignment with that vision.
- Provide an assertive public health perspective that informs and directs all Food Bank programming.
- Educate the Food Bank, network partners, and general public on the social determinants of health, the link between hunger and health, and the positive impact of access to nutritious foods on community health.
- Build community relationships and strategic partnerships with key nutrition and health/healthcare organizations; identify opportunities for collaboration and coalition building.
- Lead the development and expansion of the Food Bank’s healthcare strategies, including community-wide food insecurity screening initiative, clinic/hospital-based food pantry and/or diabetes prevention and/or management projects.
- Ensure the Food Bank maintains the highest Nutrition & Health Standards and that programs have a strong health/nutrition focus; Lead the development and communication of the Food Bank’s nutrition policy.
- Oversee the Food Bank’s on-site Garden and related educational programming.
- Lead and motivate a high functioning Community Health & Nutrition team: Hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff. Direct reports: Nutrition Education Manager, Community Health & Nutrition Manager, Garden Manager.
- Set departmental activities to ensure goals and objectives of programming are met; Create and manage budgets for nutrition and health programs.
- Meet all scheduled reporting requirements of the Texas Health & Human Services Commission/Feeding Texas (HHSC/FT) contract and act as a key contact with designated HHSC and FT representatives.
- Collaborate with the Development Team to identify funding opportunities to support community health and nutrition priorities; Provides programmatic input for grant proposals.
- Collaborate with the Research and Evaluation team on community health and nutrition research and data initiatives.
You are a great candidate if you have:
- Bachelor's degree with major course work in Public Health, Nutrition, Health Education, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Minimum five-to-eight years of full-time, wage-earning experience in healthcare, public health, community nutrition, program planning and management.
- Minimum of five years supervisory experience of full-time paid staff.
- Demonstrated understanding of health policy, healthcare landscape, and health economics.
- Demonstration of cultural competence in nutrition and dietetics; Understanding of the importance of cultural diversity in food and nutrition.
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. In particular, the ability to understand and organize detailed information and to write about or talk extemporaneously on that information.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work cooperatively under pressure with a diverse range of people. Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully with all members of society.
- Exercise good judgment and discretion; capable of handling confidential information.
- Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite of products including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.

- Graduate degree preferred in public health, public administration or public policy, or related area.
- Registered and Licensed Dietitian certification.
- The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate of health equity, with the capacity to educate others on the root causes of inequities and the social determinants of health, and strong understanding of trends and strategies to address health disparities.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish
- Extensive experience and relationships with Central Texas community and healthcare providers specifically.
- Strategic planning experience
- Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems
- Past experience working with organizations within the Feeding America network of food banks.
- Knowledge of federal emergency food programs.
